I’m a regular watcher of Real Housewives. Yolanda Hadid mentioned she saw a holistic dentist to help with her Lyme disease. It’s made her immunocompromised and the amalgam fillings she had were contributing to her suffering. She also had her breast implants removed. I don’t suffer from Lyme or anything like that, but I do have pretty severe allergies. However, I recently read an article that said the mercury in amalgam fillings could lead to minor ailments too, such as allergies. Would it be a good idea for me to get rid of mine? I’d like to not have to deal with these allergies if at all possible. Is it safe? Yolanda Hadid seem pleased, but I didn’t know if that’s for financial reasons.
Are Amalgam Fillings Safe?
While the American Dental Association (ADA) claims that amalgam (silver) fillings are perfectly safe, there has been growing evidence that more harm is done than originally thought. Many people are surprised to find that the main ingredient in their silver fillings is actually mercury. We know mercury is a toxic substance, but up until recently most tests done of the fillings were in static situations, which isn’t how we live. Then, on the other side of the spectrum, is Dr. Oz, who’s been decrying the dangers of them for a while now.
The truth is there’s no way to be absolutely certain how they affect us. We do know that mercury vapors are released by the fillings. But, the ADA still insists the amount of vapor released is nominal and safe. Despite that, it’s completely understandable why many patients, who are concerned with health would rather not keep a toxic substance in their body. There are many patients asking to have their amalgam fillings removed.
The Benefit of Holistic Dentists
You don’t want to have just any dentist remove your old amalgam fillings. We do know that mercury vapors are released in the process. Because of that, you’ll want to go to a holistic dentist who knows how to perform a sanitary amalgam removal. There are materials and special procedures we do in order to ensure you don’t inhale or swallow any pieces of mercury or mercury vapors.
Once your old fillings are removed, they can be replaced with composite (white) fillings. These contain no mercury and have the added benefits of both strengthening your teeth and matching your natural tooth color.
If you don’t have a holistic dentist near you, many mercury-free dentists also know how to do a sanitary removal. Just call their office and ask them what type of precautions and procedures they take during the removal process. If they don’t mention anything like a stopper dam, move on to a different dentist.
