There’s nothing our dentist in Burr Ridge loves more than an entire month dedicated to dental hygiene! In honor of October being National Dental Hygiene Month, we wanted to remind our patients of the importance of oral health and how it plays a big part in your overall health as well. The American Dental Association is focusing on four simple routines that can help improve your smile, including brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing. These are simple tips to help ensure your oral health routine is as effective as it can be!
Make sure that you place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gum and gently move your brush back and forth for effective results. Unless otherwise noted by our dentist in Burr Ridge, we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the chewing surfaces. Last, but not least, don’t forget to brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria! You should brush for about two minutes, two times per day.
Flossing is a great way to get rid of plaque and bacteria that your toothbrush can’t reach. It is also beneficial to your gum health. Aim to floss your teeth once a day.
Rinsing & Chewing
Using mouthwash is another facet of your oral health routine. Rinsing regularly can help reduce your chance of dental decay and infection. Finally, chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after your meal can help increase your flow of saliva and neutralize acids that bacteria produce.
Make sure you visit our dentist in Burr Ridge at least twice a year to ensure you don’t have any developing problems.
