My sister told me that it’s illegal for my dentist to give silver fillings because they’ve got mercury in them and we’ve signed a treaty saying no more mercury fillings. But, my dentist is still doing them. Is he breaking the law? He keeps insisting they’re better.
First, your dentist isn’t breaking the law, but he does seem to be resisting the latest developments and advancements in dentistry. While he may be insisting amalgam fillings are better, he’s wrong. Sorry. In reality, the white composite fillings are much better for your teeth than their silver amalgam counterparts. Not to mention most patients aren’t that thrilled with the idea of putting a known toxin in their bodies.
As for the treaty your sister mentioned, The only one I can think of she could be referring to may be the Minamata Convention on Mercury. It doesn’t have anything to do with fillings, but rather the disposal of materials containing mercury. This is the result of a small Japanese town where many villagers became sick and died as a result of mercury being disposed of into the waterways. Your dentist is likely aware of the new regulations in disposal and is (hopefully) following those. However, he can still place as many silver fillings as he prefers.
Holistic Dentistry May Be What You’re Looking For
If you’re concerned about the mercury content in fillings, you may consider looking into a holistic dentist. They only place mercury-free fillings and are careful to consider your whole health, rather than just the health of your teeth.
A second benefit of using a holistic dentist is their focus on biocompatibility. Some patients come in with a list of materials their body has a sensitivity to. At many dental practices, they don’t have a way of working around those things. They use the standard materials and that’s pretty much it. But, holistic dentists work to find the least reactive materials possible. They know your oral health affects your overall health.
We want you to feel good and be able to get out there and enjoy life.
